Slow and Steady

A friend shared that she's on a 500 calories a day diet so she can look good in her swimsuit. Any time we give into the binge now starve later mentality we're engaging in a dangerous kind of contest. For some of us, the competition is between practicing a lifetime of healthy eating with less dramatic and immediate results that last versus the excitement of a roller coaster ride of extremes with results that are usually fleeting. Starvation diets never work in the long run and besides being unhealthy, your metabolism slows down and chances are good that you will end up gaining the weight back.

We live in a culture of extremes. Binge this week (maybe month or year) and go on a diet the next. I used to buy into it and it kept me ten pounds above what was healthy because when it came time to "pay" I'd try it for a few weeks, would end up frustrated and sealed the deal to end the diet with a anarchistic sugar binge. "I'm the boss of me, not some diet!" I'd think as I gulped down a Blizzard that clearly pwned me. Then I'd think I just didn't try hard enough and the cycle would start over and over until *I* was over the cycle.

Wouldn't you rather take charge and begin a healthy LIFE right now, knowing that once you reach your goal you're more likely to stay there because you reached it in a healthy and balanced way, hopefully finding  new hobbies other than junk food?

Moderation and a lifestyle of balanced eating is the 50's way!

As an aside, do you think a woman reaches an age when she "shouldn't" wear a bikini?

  1. I'm 19 years old and don't feel comfortable enough for the biki yet. I do not think that there is an age limit for bikinis, it's a personal thing. Actually, some women in their 40s look better in bikinis than some teenage girls (take Jane Fonda for example. She looked absouletely gorgeos in her 40s)

  3. Well... I'm certainly not to a place where I feel comfortable wearing a bikini. I have seen some older women look great in bikinis, even some in their 50s and 60s.

But for most women, I prefer a one piece. It seems to leave more to the imagination. Esther Williams of movie water musical fame is still producing swimsuits in the most darling retro styles. That's my pick. You can't improve on the 1950s for wearable fashions.
