It's nothing new, really. The "studies" funded by those who could benefit from the proposed cures (pills, potions, surgery, snake oil) and conclusions published as scientific proof that people who want to lose weight are fighting some kind of cosmic law that will keep them overweight.
The latest is a piece from The New York Times, The Fat Trap. It looks at a study that "proves":

What I can't fathom is why the fact that the participants were placed on a starvation diet of no more than 550 calories a day wasn't factored in. It's a well researched fact that starvation diets do not work beyond short term "gains."
I think the most dangerous trap facing anyone who wants to lose weight in a healthy manner is the idea that it isn't possible.
